If your company moves refrigerated goods, you’re probably familiar with Utility Trailer. They’re the largest manufacturer of reefer trailers and a leading manufacturer of dry freight vans, curtain side trailers, and flatbeds. They aren’t just a leader in manufacturing; they’re also leading the way toward sustainable practices across the trucking industry. Food Logistics recognized their achievements by giving the company their Top Green Provider Award.
Food Logistics is the only publication that focuses on the movement of products through the worldwide cold food supply chain. Every year, they recognize companies across this industry that improve sustainability. Their Top Green Provider Award picks include all facets of cold food production and delivery, including food producers, logistics companies, consultants, and recyclers. Of the thousands of businesses they cover, only seven were picked for this award.
Utility Trailer’s efforts to improve sustainability start with manufacturing. They commissioned Ramboll Group to perform environmental and health audits and help design programs that will enhance efficiency. According to the consultancy, these efforts save Utility $1.4 million each year through reduced use of energy, materials, and water and a reduction in waste generation.
This focus on sustainability also extends to their trailer designs, reducing their customers’ environmental impact and operating costs. The Utility Aerodynamic Side Skirt is standard on all of its trailers, and their Aerodynamic Tail is avalailable as a factory-installed option on all models. MVT Solutions, a third-party fuel economy testing and consulting firm, tested the effects of these aerodynamic add-ons. Combined, the Aerodynamic Tail and Side Skirt saves operators 746 gallons of fuel every 100,000 miles.
